About Ayer, MA
Ayer is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, located thirty-six miles northwest of Boston along Route 2. Originally part of Groton, it was incorporated on February 14, 1871. The town was home to Fort Devens, which the federal government established to train New England soldiers for World War I. Fort Devens was a significant influence in the area until its closure in 1996. The bulk of Devens was sold to MassDevelopment, a semi-private development authority tasked with turning Devens into a residential and business community. Within its relatively small area, Ayer boasts numerous industries and is located near Boston’s commuter rail service. Ayer is governed by Town Meeting and has a 5-member Board of Selectmen.
