About Shirley, MA
Shirley is located in Middlesex County, about 50 miles north of Boston along Route 2 and a short distance from the New Hampshire border. It has convenient commuter rail service with a depot in Shirley Village along the Fitchburg MBTA line. Two Massachusetts Department of Correction prisons are located in Shirley, and the Devens community is partially located in the town. Shirley is governed by Open Town Meeting and a 3-member Board of Selectmen. A new regional school system shared with the neighboring Town of Ayer was officially launched in 2011. The high school is Ayer Shirley High School. The community is primarily residential but has a small business community.
