As of June 4th, the Massachusetts RMV is allowing standard Driver’s Licenses & ID Cards to be renewed using photos that were taken when customers were under 21 years old (as long as the photo was taken less than 14 years ago). This change makes more customers eligible to renew their standard license or ID online now. However, they cannot obtain a REAL ID online at this time.
Renewal Reminder Letters
The MA RMV has sent a Driver’s License/ID Card renewal reminder letter to customers who have licenses (all classes) and ID cards that expired in March, April, and May and have NOT renewed yet.
This letter explains that these credentials have all been extended until September 2020 and that they do not need to be renewed yet. It also explains that the REAL ID compliance deadline has been revised to October 1, 2021 [note 2021, not 2020], and that, because REAL ID requires an in-person visit, the RMV has suspended issuance of REAL IDs until September 2020.
The letter offers customers two renewal options:
- Renew online NOW and obtain a Standard Driver’s License or ID Card, or
- Wait until September to renew in-person and obtain a REAL ID.
Note: This does not apply to all customers with credentials marked Limited-Term. Some Limited-Term credential holders will receive a separate notification at a later date informing them of their options.
