Commercial Drivers License – Self Certification Deadline January 30, 2014

Update: The deadline has been extended to April 30, 2014.

Read our blog post with updated details: CDL Self Certification Deadline Extended to April 30, 2014

Under Federal and State requirements implemented in 2012, drivers who currently hold or want to obtain a Commercial Drivers License must inform their state’s RMV of the type of commerce they operate within (interstate or intrastate) and whether or not they are required to hold a medical certificate. While these requirements have been in place, ALL CDL holders must self-certify no later than January 30, 2014.

Drivers operating in certain types of commerce will be required to submit a current medical examiner’s certificate to their State Drivers Licensing Agency to obtain a “certified” medical status as part of their driving record. Failure to provide and keep the medical certificate up-to-date will result in becoming “non-certified” and may result in losing their CDL.

NOTE: The procedures for self-certification and registration may vary from state to state, so contact the RMV of the state that has issued your CDL for specific requirements.

New MA RMV CDL Self Certification Online Transaction

In November 2013, the Massachusetts RMV created a new “CDL Self-Certification” online transaction on the RMV website to self-certify and upload their medical certificate (if applicable). The CDL Self-Certification transaction is located on the Online Services page of www.massrmv.com. It will be in the “Other” category.

When processing this online transaction, you must provide the required information and upload your medical certificate (if applicable). To upload the certificate, you must have it as a PDF (.pdf) or a JPEG (.jpg) file. Upon completing the upload, you will receive a message informing you if the upload succeeded or failed. During the online transaction, you will also be allowed to sign up for email notifications about your certification status (such as when it expires).

Once the transaction is finished, the self-certification process is complete.
